Dude,

That picture of them holding up the baby in Lebenon after bombings absolutely broke my heart.

We're lucky to have been born in the US. Even 9/11 didn't wake people up to the fact that senseless destruction only begets senseless destruction. We're lucky that we're not one of the less heavily armed countries that has to live with more heavily armed countries lobbing random bombs at them. Honestly - we're lucky.

But, of course, empires fall and who knows when it will be the US's turn to just cry helplessly as another country rips it with bombs because the knuckleheads with the power to do so ordered the hit.

Kurt--that picture also fucked me up. It was so sad and morbid. I can understand why people in those countries hate us. Either we do the bombing/killing directly or we arm another country/sect within the country to such destruction.

For those victims payback is only available in the form of terroist acts. Americans have really bought into the notion of "surgical strikes" or minimal collateral damage---that's nonsense. It just leads us to denial and confusion as to why others despise us (apart from our western values and so on).

As I always conclude my discussions about the ME--while I do hope for peace, don't act stunned when we are attacked again.

The two that stood out to me were the picture of the theif in Mexico tied to a pole, and of the starving Darfur refugees. They are all powerful though.

powerful pics...the 3rd place child sex worker took me by surprise mostly because of the matter-of-fact look on her face.

and, I found the one of the single woman against the security officer on the West Bank pretty powerful.

The sports images were cool, too- some of them purely for their art.
