The US is about to lose has lost to Ghana and has been eliminated from the World Cup. I watched the game out of curiosity and boredom and the US team just didn't look - to my unknowledgeable eyes - like they are World Cup caliber. A step behind the whole game though they did score their FIRST goal of the Cup. What's funny (and patethic) is how upbeat US commentators have been about our chances. But watch out, I hear our 2010 team is gonna be bad ass.

I know, I know - they got everyone all hyped coming in by saying we're ranked number five in the world in soccer (or futbol, whatever). It makes you wonder - is the US the best in the world at ANY team sport anymore???!!!
We suck at soccer, no argument. But we invented baseball and basketball and the last I checked we lost in the first world baseball tournament, well short of the finals - and got our ass whipped a couple of times in basketball at the last Olympics.
WE CAN'T EVEN WIN A WAR IN FRIGGIN' IRAQ!!!!
Even in individual sports, look at boxing, with four "world" championships to be had, only one of the heavyweight titles belongs to an American. Look at tennis, the world number ones are Europeans and there was only one Yankee who made the quarterfinals in either the mens or womens draws at the French Open.
Does Tiger Woods have to hold it down for all of America? You know Phil "The Choke" Mickelson can't hold down shit.
What is this country coming to?
Bring back the friggin' steroids.
hahah...that's funny Kurt...yeah I am not sure why we can't win world wide events in baseball and basketball...that's just lame. as for futbol, i think the US was over-hyped. since Honduras was not in it, i was rooting for the US so i was disappointed by the very poor performance. I was overseas at the start of the Cup and everyone was excited. I watched the US vs Italy game. the refs did a horrible job and handed that draw to Italy. sorry Bart. and the lost to Ghana also came on a questionable penalty call.
but maybe 2010...i just love chanting U S A...ala homer simpson...haha. other countries have chants and songs for their teams what to we have? all i heard was U S A, U S A...like baboons...maybe by 2010 we will have something additional to the homer ape chants.
My guess is that the excessive salaries paid to most of our top athletes once they turn pro could have a lot to do with our poor performances in world tournaments. I always say that if I won the lottery (10 mil and up), I'd stop working, so it's no surprise to me that some guys making that much a year are kind of half-assing it. Even bench warmers pull in lottery type salaries.
Olympics? What do I get? A gold medal? Whatever, I just bought three last week. I'm going to my Mcmansion to watch some movies and play XBox with my boys while a stripper does her thing on the pole we have built into the basement then maybe we'll go out for a ride in one of my ten cars.
Not saying that reducing salaries would change anything because the rest of the world is just plain catching up. Allow athletes to eat and train just like any others and the playing field is levelled, meaning that things like teamwork, instead of individual talent, become more important.
As for soccer, we'll catch up as the sport becomes more popular and more kids start passing up basketball and baseball in favor of it. Still, though, we probably won't get much better until our professional leagues do and that seems like it'll never happen. Come to think of it, that was probably the reason behin that ridiculous number 5 FIFA ranking; trying to get Americans more into it. Little do most of them know that those FIFA rankings are about as significant as those on the myriad of VH1 countdown shows.
As for steroids, I know it's heartless, but there should be separate leagues and competitions where steroids are required. Oh, wait, that'd be illegal, wouldn't it?
