Last night I got out of work early and decided to cook. Remembering a Boy meets Grill episode involving a mustard glazed beef tenderloin, I looked up the recipe and went shopping. The glaze consists of grain mustard, dijon mustard, honey, soy sauce, white wine vinegar, salt, pepper, paprika, fresh garlic and fresh rosemary. You let those ingredients meld together for at least 30 minutes and then glaze your meat and cook. Granted, I was working on a stove and not a grill, and I think buying a lesser cut of meat really hurt me, but I have to say, this was not too great. The way it looks on tv when Bobby Flay makes you think it will be out of this world. Not so much. Then again, it was probably just me. Lesson learned: just b/c professional chefs with top shelf ingredients make everything look so easy on tv doesn't mean it will taste good when you make it.

you get an A for effort. one day you are going to make a woman really happy...for now though rely on the claw!
Bobby Flay aka Bobby Flair sucks -- I watch him on Iron Chef and all he makes is a mess. He tends to use too many ingredients at once -- resulting in some sauce with unidentifable roots. Keep it simple -- let the foods natural flavors come out -- Also you might want to try one of those grills that you put on a conventional stove top for your next grilling adventure and maybe put some flavored wood chips in some foil to get the aromatics going. I would also buy a great mustard -- with all the money you spent on the other ingredients preparing his recipie you could have bought some imported mustard from the grand central food market and added some white wine, sparkling wine or white wine vinegar to give it an extra kick. Mushrooms and any left over red wine makes a great steak sauce too -- dont forget to add some flour as a thickening agent :)
Last but not least -- a good cook I know told me that recipies really only work best for the one that invented it. Soooo my advice -- even though you havent asked is --- experiment -- try a new twist on the ingredients you like and see what happens.
Deep Thoughts
Bobby Flay has man boobs. And wears shirts that accentuate them. I am not turned on by this, but just think that his producers do not like him or else they would have pointed this out to him. Or maybe they did and he just doesn't care. I guess we'll know for sure when he wears crotchless pants or leather chaps on his show.
Thanks, Nittles. Good advice to be sure. It probably didn't help that I was rushing to get everything done and eat at a reasonable hour. For me it's definitely still an experimentation thing. I am learning from my mistakes and whittling down my menu. My goal is to have 2 solid dishes for each meal of the day that I can make consistently. So far I have one breakfast and one dinner. Last night's dish wasn't spectacular but it was edible and with practice I'm sure I can make it better. Trial and error is frustrating but also part of the fun.
Trab....you are evil man. just plain evil.
