The owner of this house turned down millions of dollars from developers even though all his neighbors sold. Eventually, they figured out a way to build around him. Read the story here.

good for him! fuck these developers! Obviously, it's not about holding out for future buy-out money, because after that development is completed around and above him, no one will want to buy it off of him to "develop" because it will be overwhelmed by the development surrounding it. He should open up a adult entertainment store or donate the building to a nonprofit for a methadone clinic. It kinda reminds me of the little red lighthouse at the foot of the GW Bridge - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Little_Red_Lighthouse
I never knew about the little red lighthouse. Cool. As for the holdout owner, would you have turned down millions? Absent a compelling personal attachment, I would have sold. But that doesn't mean that I have a problem with this guy - I'm glad he had the choice to stay or sell and that he wasn't forced out by an abuse of eminent domain.

yeah initially i thought it was to get extra loot but there is more to this story than meets the eye.
