In response to the recent events, however, Lou's been in full xenophobic glory. This is a screen shot from one of his recent shows, which lays out the supposed target of the Reconquista. Apparently, a multibillion dollar news organization such as his is a bit understaffed in the fact checking department - this map was taken from a known white supremist group - the Council of Conservative Citizen's (the CCC - a nice play on an old fave of theirs). U.S. Prison Population on December 31, 2004 --
-- 2,135,901 prisoners were held in Federal or State prisons or in local jails -- an increase of 2.6% from yearend 2003, less than the average annual growth of 3.4% since yearend 1995.
The average cost for a male prisoner per year is over $32,000.
The House bill that seeks to make it a felony to be in the U.S. without authorization would place an additional 11-12 million people in prison!
Such an influx would be impossible. We would be building courthouses, prisons for decades as well as providing endless medical care and other services to such prisoners. And more importantly, immigrants would still risk migrating to the US--so there would not be any decrease in immigration or "border control".
Here is an idea: Rather than wasting tax payer's dollars to imprison people that have commit nothing unlawful (other than being undocumented in the USA), lets bring them into society and let those immigrants keep on working and contributing to the economy.
Fiscal conservatives should be salivating at the idea of 11-12 million people paying more taxes rather than the gov't spending over $32K for each in prison costs alone (yeah there would be many more costs too this $32K/prisoner estimate i.e. litigation).
You don't have to be a hippie left-wing nut to see that the House plan is just nonsense aimed at distracting the public from the war on Iraq and tugging on the emotional strings of anti-immigrant voters.
