Penn & Teller's Bullshit--Last night I saw their episode on Reparations. There was a part about a black man in South Carolina (I think) who was a former director for the local NAACP but now he marches every day to some Civil War memorial in his city wearing a confederate uniform and carrying the Confederate flag. At the memorial he salutes several times and marches back home. This former NAACP local chapter president/director believes that the US should give reparations to southern states for the civil war!!! can you believe that shit? what was the Reconstruction period all about? why would the U.S. give reparations to people today for the acts of treason committed by others over 140 years ago? why would a black man wave the confederate flag? anyway, he just seemed crazy...he reminded me of Dave Chappelle's skit of a blind african-american who heads a local chapter of the KKK. Even Chappelle's make up (grey beard) was like the guy from the Penn & Teller show.
I have a spot on myspace.com now (I did it to hear my friend's little bros band and found a lot of other good music on there). Anyways, when you go to you're home page, they always flash new people who've just come on line. The other day I see this young black hotty - with a "rebel flag" Lynard Skynard t-shirt on. I was like Lil Jon - "HHHHHHWWWWWWHHHHHAAAATTTTTT!!!!"
Maybe that flag is just not a symbol of treason and slavery for some. Call it ignorance, call it tolerance - call it bullshit. Definitely blows my mind.
Oh yeah, continuing from the other open thread (don't want to piss Big D off) - speaking of Indian films - I just saw the DVD of Salaam Bombay! - truly great film. Maybe what makes it great is the story behind the making of it, but it was such a pleasure. It's also one of the few films with a social conscience that had a real impact and followup. The film funded schools for homeless kids that have grown to number 17 and are now partially funded by the Indian government. I highly recommend it, even if you've seen it, to watch the version with the Director's comments and also the featurettes. Had me up until 1:00 am last night - but well worth it.
